St-Paul-de-Vence and Foundation Maeght

St. Paul-de-Vence is a beautiful and extremely picturesque village – maybe the most picturesque village of the entire region – and one of the most famous mountain villages in the hinterland of Nice. It is a classical medieval “village perché”, which means a perched village. The small village has been thoroughly restored, but the streets and the buildings are the original ones. Today the village is dominated by galleries and studios. From the top of the town wall at the end of Rue Grande there are stunning views towards the Mediterranean. One of Europe’s finest museums of modern art, Fondation Maeght, is located just outside St-Paul de-Vence. The museum was built in 1964 by the Parisian art dealers Aimé and Marguerite Maeght. A visit to the museum is highly recommended.

 

Biot

Biot is the centre of glass production on the coast. Typical glass from Biot is thick with small air bubbles (so-called verre à boules). At La Verrerie de Biot you can watch the glassblowers at work …Just outside Biot you can enjoy Musée Fernand Léger. The museum is open from 10 a.m. until at nightfall. Closed on Tuesdays. The museum includes more than 400 works by the famous sculptor Fernand Léger.

 

Vence

Vence is a charming medieval town with a cathedral and a modern atmosphere. The town is appreciated by many artists and senior citizens. An approximate number of 250 Scandinavian families call Vence their home.You enter the old town through Porte de Peyra dating back to 1441 and arrive at Place du Peyra with its gurgling fountain, friendly cafés and the cathedral, which is one of the smallest cathedrals in France. Just outside the town gate you will find Place du Frêne which is graced by a centuries old ash tree.Outside the town of Vence in the direction towards Saint-Juannet you will discover Chapelle du Rosaire-Henri Matisse. The chapel is the crowning glory of the work of a lifetime of the artist who completed the chapel when he was well into his eighties and almost totally blind. The famous glass mosaic panes with bold patterns of royal blue, bright green and yellow provide a sparkling light in the simple chapel.

 

Nice

Nice, the biggest tourist city on the Mediterranean coast – Côte d’Azur – and the fifth largest city of France with the second biggest airport of the country, was founded by the Greek and colonised by the Romans. For years the mild winter climate and the luxuriant, subtropical vegetation have attracted thousands of visitors from all over the world. Nice boasts numerous museums, great beaches and a nice relaxed atmosphere in the streets.Sights in Nice: The old part of town – Vieux Nice – is definitely worth a visit. On Cours Saleya you will discover a big and richly coloured flower, fruit and vegetable market - a delight to the eye and a fantastic place to go shopping. On Mondays this is the site of a great antique market instead.Museums worth mentioning: Musée Matisse, Musée Chagall, Musée d’Art Contemporain. Moreover, Nice has severalinteresting churches, e.g. Cathédrale Orthodoxe Russe St-Nicolas.

 

Sophia Antipolis and Antibes

The town of Valbonne Sophia Antipolis is uniquely attractive. The community has welcomed into its land the science park of Sophia Antipolis. Sophia-Antipolis is the name chosen by its founder Pierre Lafitte for the “International City of Science and Wisdom”. In ancient Greek Sophia means wisdom and Antipolis was the name of Antibes in the Antiquity. The technopolis is Europe first and foremost, and is famous for its dynamic and high-quality environment. But equally, our Community has not forgotten to make the most of the authentic charm of the magnificently preserved old village of Valbonne. The community cordially invites you to take a stroll through the shady streets lined with flowers, to linger on the terraces of the cafes and restaurants and to take the time to savour a fine lifestyle in wonderful surroundings. The village of Valbonne-Sophia Antipolis is proud of having preserves two thirds of its territory’s open spaces and to offer a vast leisure and relaxation zone where the future has rediscovered its roots.

 

On the other side of the Baie des Anges, facing Nice, Antibes is one of the most beautiful townson the Côte d’Azur, built on a splendid site between two coves, it has managed to retain its Mediterranean authenticity with ramparts standing vertically over the sea, port Vauban and narrow, twisting streets. The Provencal market offers every morning to the tourist, a big choice oflocal products full of colours and perfumes.
